As per the latest statistics issued by the Delhi based, Telecom regulatory Association of India (TRAI), India has crossed the target of 500 million mobile subscribers (GSM+CDMA) well ahead of the target date of 2010.Let’s have a look on how the mobile phone strikes the Indian economy.

India has been regarded as an attractive market for the growth of communication sector. The multinational mobile industry giants are having their inroads to India due to the factors like ease in FDI (Foreign direct investment) and large availability of the technically skilled work-force. The Indian mobile market is a good platform for both entry level as well as high-end mobile phones. The mobile
market has a major effect on the Indian Economy; even the government is enforcing laws and policies favoring infrastructural growth of this Industry. According to the industrial analysts, by 2010, the mobile phone industry would be driven by voice, mobile services and multimedia. In India the mobile operators are using two technologies –GSM (Global system for mobile communication) and CDMA (code division multiple access).India has around 1 billion GSM users and 39 million CDMA users as per cellular operators association of India’s latest statistics. The greatest achievement of the GSM technology is that it has employed both skilled and non-skilled manpower and is the primary growth driven technology. GSM constitutes about 80% mobile users in India. With the coming of 3G technology Indian Mobile
market is at its boom adding 9 million mobile subscribers monthly. The next generation network (NGN)has also set its foot in the Indian mobile market. The government has also implemented MNP, mobile number portability in its agenda giving a rapid extension not only in terms of subscribers but also
technology and services.

The outstanding growth in the Indian mobile industry has brought astounding growth in its statistics.According to TRAI, in October 2008, 10.4 million Indians signed up for a phone service raising the total user data in India to 363.9 million (31.5%). Today wireless operators are surging ahead, many first time subscribers are opting for a mobile phone connection rather than a land-line connection. Looking at the economic situation, even during the global economic recession the Indian economy is slated to grow at around 7% in 2009-2010 laying a tremendous opportunity for both domestic and international investors in the Indian Mobile Market. And now the Indian mobile market comprises some of the biggest player .The revenue generated by this industry show a continuous growth at 9.91%.The revenues of the mobile industry stood at USD 7.36 billion for the second quarter ending September 2008 and the month of April 2008, India overtook US as the second largest wireless market.

The Cell Phone Service Providers have made provisions to allow users to access the Internet through the cell phone, without taking the pain to log into their computers. Cell Phones now can be used as planner, navigation system and for games. This industry has a long way to go with unending cut throat competition and mergers of big companies we all are blessed with a new technology and enormous job opportunity which in turn increases the per capita income leading a growth in the country’s economy.
